The Institute of Education (IOE)The Institute of Education (IOE) is one of the world’s leading institutions for education and social sciences and tops the league table for education research. The IOE undertakes around a quarter of the education research carried out in UK universities and is also the second highest recipient of social science research funding among higher education institutions. Two IOE departments are involved in this proposal the London Knowledge Lab and the Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment (CPA). The London Knowledge Lab (LKL) is an interdisciplinary research lab run as a collaboration between two of the UK’s most prominent centres of world-class research – the Institute of Education (IOE) and Birkbeck (BBK). The LKL brings together 75 computer and social scientists from a very broad range of fields, including: education, sociology, culture and media, semiotics, knowledge engineering, information management, data mining, personalization and ubiquitous technologies. The LKL has a long track record in national and international research, with current projects totaling ~£6.5m/7.1M€.The lab has been involved in over 10 recent EU projects, co-coordinating both the WebLabs and Playground projects.
