Term Definition Alternative
Adaptive Sequencing Sequencing that adapts to the student, resulting on each student seeing a different sequence of Tasks
Animated Lesson Each of the Tasks in Maths-Whizz that are presented to the students, one after the other (sequenced) In the context of Maths-Whizz, Tasks can be called ‘Animated Lessons’. Each animated lesson is composed of a sequence of (Whizz) questions (as well as a teaching section and a test). Also known as an Interactive exercise.
Bottom-out hint The last hint in a sequence of hints that (almost) gives out the solution
Coarse-grain goal Something high-level we want the students to learn, e.g. equivalence of fractions ‘Objectives’, ‘Learning Objectives’
Experiment A series of sessions with students where conditions are applied to sub-groups of students to investigate the effect of a ‘treatment’. It is not necessarily conducted in classroom and is more controlled than a study in that we make an effort to control some of the conditions that are not of interest but could affect the result.
Explicit Feedback Some information, given to students as a result of their actions, designed to modify students’ behaviour. It can take different forms (e.g. verbal, textual). Explicit Feedback can also be provided through some visualised information that is designed to increase awareness on a particular aspect (e.g. use of language terminology).
Fine-grain goal Some subtask we want the students to achieve in a task, e.g. use the same denominator on all fractions Task Goal
Hint Hints are a support mechanism that (in the context to iTalk2learn) provides some suggestion to student in relation to a particular step within a Fractions Tutor or Whizz question. See also ‘Bottom-out hint’.
Integrated Feedback Integrated feedback is designed in an environment (usually an ELE) to provide some (usually subtle) indication about the actions of the student that implies whether they are correct or incorrect (e.g. a checkmark or an x, a change of colour on an object on the screen).
Integration Platform The iTalk2Learn system from an architectural / software engineering point of view. Jose is doing most of the work on it in WP4.
iTalk2Learn website The public-facing webpage of the project: www.italk2learn.eu
iTalk2Learn platform What the students use, a web-based system that presents several Tasks to students
Learning Objectives See ‘Coarse-grain goal’ This term is ambiguous. Please use ‘Coarse-grain goal’ instead.
Pilot See Study ‘Trial’, ‘Study’.
Question (Whizz) See Whizz Question ‘Whizz Question’, ‘Task’
Sequencer The part of the system that is responsible for sequencing Tasks, i.e. it decides which Task should be offered to the student once they have finished the current one (or just want to move to the next one).
Study a series of sessions (usually in a realistic or semi-realistic setting) where students are observed with respect to some aspects of interest (e.g. their interaction helps in the design of the intelligent functionality because it is faster / cheaper than implementing everything with a task for the ELE, with the added benefit of their reaction to feedback). Could be used also to collect data under realistic circumstances. Conditions are not necessarily assigned. ‘Pilot’, ‘Trial’
To Sequence The action of providing one Task after the other to students
To Switch A special kind of sequencing, in which a structured Task is followed by a exploratory one or viceversa
Task Each of the “steps” or “phases” in a learning sequence. May be procedural (Whizz, Fractions Tutor) or exploratory (on the ELE) The small steps inside Whizz tasks are called ‘questions’ – there are normally 10.
Trial See Study ‘Study’, ‘Pilot’.
Task Goal See Fine-grain goal Fine-grain goal
Whizz Question In the context of Maths-Whizz, a Question is each of the substeps inside an interactive/animated Lesson (usually ten). ‘Task’
Wizard-of-Oz Study A Study where part of the functionality of an intelligent system is (unknowingly by the students) undertaken by a human person “under the curtains” (the wizard); this allows early studies with the system when the artificial intelligence is not still in place
