3d iTalk2Learn Review meeting 8 – 9 December
2015
London The consortium will present an overview of the project results achieved through the summative evaluation. There will be a live demonstration of the iTalk2Learn platform, followed by dedicated workshops on specific aspects including intuitive platform interaction, speech recognition and speech analysis for affect recognition.

Partners from RUB will be discussing under which conditions collaborative learning is efficient within Productive Failure, and results of an explorative process data analysis at Institute of Psychology of the University of Kassel. Germany.

10th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning (EC-TEL 2015)
Partners from UHi discussed a new approach for further improving the affect recognition performance in Toledo, Spain. The approach is proven by experiments on low-level speech features extracted from data which was collected in a study with German students solving mathematical tasks.

16th Biennial EARLI for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI 2015)
RUB presented iTalk2Learn at 16th Biennial European Conference in Limassol, Cyprus. In addition, RUB researchers are co-authors of a paper on another project which is related to our work in iTalk2Learn.

IOE presented iTalk2Learn at 12th International Conference on Technology in Mathematics Teaching in Faro, Portugal. ICTMT 12 was hosted by the Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCT) of the University of Algarve, that develops its activity in the field of training and lifelong learning, research, as well as in scientific and technical dissemination in many fields including Electronics and Computer Engineering, Physics, and Mathematics.

DGPs 2014
At Deutsche Gesellschaft für Psychology, iTalk2Learn presented the paper “Eine Quasi-experimentelle Studie zur Rolle kooperativen Lernens für die Effektivität des Productive Failure Ansatzes [Investigating the impact of collaborative learning on the effectiveness of Productive Failure]”. The paper presents a study investigating the effects of exploratory learning activities when learning fractions in individual or collaborative learning settings.

iTalk2learn submitted several papers to ECTEL 2014. Our fifth project meeting was in Graz, co-located with the conference.

Shropshire Cross-phase Mathematics Conference
Alice Hansen was invited to speak as a keynote speaker to the conference with the remit of talking about teaching fractions generally and the iTalk2Learn project specifically. 85 teachers were in attendance and 30% signed up to hear more about the project and how they could use the platform and Fractions Lab in their classrooms.

iTalk2Learn presented the paper ‘Automatic Subclasses Estimation for a Better Classification with HNNP’ at ISMIS. The paper presented an approach for improving the classification performance in phoneme recognition.

ICLS took place in Boulder, Colorado, USA. iTalk2Learn presented the paper “Does collaboration affect learning in a Productive Failure setting?” as part of the symposium “Combining Generation and Expository. Instruction to Prepare Students to Transfer Big Ideas Across School Topics” (Glogger, 2014).

iTalk2Learn Fifth General Meeting
Partners met in London for project overview, compared actual status vs. plan, discussed sequencing structured tasks, task-dependent and task-independent support with focus on trials, speech recognition and speech production. Also WP5 evaluation has been started in order to get a defined structure and content for the annual report on WP5.

iTalk2Learn representatives, UHi, attended CSEDU 2014, the International Conference on Computer Supported Education. It is a yearly meeting place for presenting and discussing new educational environments, best practices and case studies on innovative technology-based learning strategies – such as iTalk2Learn.

During the meeting partners defined priorities for the next three months such as sequencing implementation, speech data collection and transcription, and Fractions Lab and Fractions Tutor translation and pilot. iTalk2Learn representatives attended the FP7 Concertation Meeting for all FP7 e-learning projects. This was a great opportunity for discussion regarding cooperation between iTalk2Learn project and other e-learning projects.

iTalk2Learn at BETT 2014
iTalk2Learn partners, Whizz, represented the project at BETT 2014. BETT (The British Educational Training and Technology Show) is a world-leading education technology and training show is a great opportunity to find out about the project, as well as what else is on the market. Every year, around 35,000 educational professionals attend the show, with over 700 solutions providers and commercial partners in attendance.

Third Project Meeting
During this General Meeting at partner RUB’s base in Bochum, Germany, the consortium as a whole was lucky enough to to receive a demonstration of aspects of an early version of the iTalk2Learn platform. Some very exciting ideas were discussed around the idea of speech recognition usage in the resultant platform, and methods of adaptation according to student’s needs – which should all contribute towards an optimal tutoring experience!

iTalkLearn followed closely the Learning Analytics Summer Institute (LASI 2013) in Stanford. A series of meetings were held in LKL and interesting discussions relevant to iTalk2Learn ensued after each panel session.

Second Project Meeting
The second project meeting has been held, during the second quarter of the project. This time, the base was at the London Knowledge Lab, where partners IOE and BBK are based.
